A high efficiency step of Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) process is bioHAR ®, a membrane bioreactor system consisting in a high efficiency combination of biological activated sludge and membrane processes. The application of membrane Bioreactor in “Zero Discharge Water Recycling” process is the most suitable pre-treatment for a further processing through reverse osmosis.
Ultrafiltration is an effective application to reduce the SDI of the water and to remove suspensions, colloids and particulates that can foul reverse osmosis membrane. Ultrafiltration membrane applied in water recycling consists in a low pressure process for selective filtration of molecules of specified size and weight, typically in the range from 1000 MW to 1.000.000 MW. Typical applications of Ultra filtration membrane are concentration and recovery of high molecular weight compounds separation/removal of contaminants, clarification, removal of colloids and suspended solids.
Reverse osmosis and Nanofiltration (membrane filtration) may be used in zero liquid discharge process to remove low molecular solutes (salts, small organic molecules) from a solvent (water). The separation occurs with an imposed pressure higher than the osmotic pressure, forcing the solvent to pass through the membrane while the solute is rejected.
